!PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE: of Mary Louise McCord Spidell

Eulogy: Harold A. Spidell was born in Lake City, Iowa on 7 Sep 1912. When he was yet a small boy, he moved with his family to St. Joseph, Missouri. He and Mary Louise McCord were married on 9 May 1941. During World War II, Harold served in the Army for 4 1/2 years. He was a member of an anti-aircraft gun crew, and later a member of the Military Police Corps. His major area of service was in the Aleutian Islands. Harold A. Spidell always liked working with his hands and creating things out of wood, metal or paints. After the war he was a blacksmith for the Parks Department in St. Joseph, Missouri. He continued his hobbies and crafts even though he had progressive, painful, rheumatoid arthritis. The Parks Department used a sheet metal barbecue grill for all of the parks around St. Joseph. The design, the prototype, and most of the grills were made by Harold. He was also a snow plow driver, and he was always ready to go whenever he was called out. The times when he was called out were usually in the middle of the night in weather conditions which were right to cause the most pain from his arthritis. In 1955 his arthritis had advanced to the point that he was forced to move from Missouri and relocate in Arizona. By this time, his family included 2 sons, Donald & Dennis. He was always a kind, loving father and a friend to anyone in need. In Phoenix, Arizona he worked for the Yellow Cab Co. After 15 years with this company he was forced to retire because of his health. He remained active in his retirement, and he devoted his new life to his hobbies. By this time his hands were misshapen and painful almost all of the time, but he continued his work with wood, and he learned a new craft, which was painting on fabric with pall point paints. He also devoted his life to helping others. Looking around the trailer court, Holiday Spa, where he lived, one can find many examples of his craft and items which he designed to improve the lifestyle of others. Harold was in pain from his arthritis and his heart problems for the last fifty years of his life, but he was known by most as a cheerful, helpful, loving neighbor. He always had a kind word and a joke for every person and for every situation, even during the last moments of his life. His last words were uttered as he was being wheeled into surgery. He pointed to his wife, Mary, and said, "See? I told you I didn't feel good this morning." He never woke up from his surgery. He left behind his pain to advance to a better world. He left behind him his wife, Mary; two sons, Donald and Dennis; and seven grandchildren.
