Eulogy: Mary Louise Spidell was born to John Steward McCord and Lennie Jane Dillamon on 22 Jan 1922. Her family did not have much money, so her mother taught her the benefits of hard work and service very early in life. They had a sort of family business of taking in laundry. That family business even continued for so long that I can remember them having piles of laundry in the front room and my grandmother saying, "those are Whatchamacallits, those are Whosits, and those are Thingamabobs...." I never could figure out how they kept everything straight. Anyway, it was in this setting that Mary learned to work and started getting interested in sewing. Her interest started out as they were mending some items which they received for laundering. Mary as a child earned spending money by doing the mending, and became interested in learning more about the art of sewing. She learned from friends and relatives until she was able to make clothing for herself and her family. Mary Louise McCord married Harold Alfred Spidell 9 May 1941, and shortly thereafter, her husband went into the Army. He served in the Aleutian Islands during World War II. Donald L. Spidell was born 21 Dec 1942, and Harold didn't see him until he was two years old. During the war Mary was active in the USO and other military support organizations. She continued to sew, and even sewed a complete dress military uniform for her son, Donald. After the war, the Spidell family settled in St. Joseph, Missouri, and Mary continued to sew for her family, relatives and friends. She also was active in the Girl Scouts, the American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary. Mary's mother was staying with them and from time to time she still took in laundry and Mary helped her with that occupation. Shortly after Mary's husband was discharged from the Army, he was found to have rheumatoid arthritis. His problem got steadily worse until he was told that he would be in a wheelchair unless he moved to someplace like Arizona. So in 1953 Mary helped him sell their home and move to Phoenix, Arizona with their two sons and Mary's mother, Lennie Jane McCord. In Phoenix, Mary found that she needed to work to supplement the family's income. She went to work as a seamstress at a dress shop in Christown Mall. Her husband found work as a taxi cab driver, and his condition steadily improved until he was able to become quite active once again. Mary remained active with her husband in the VFW and in the American Legion, and the whole family became active in square dancing. Mary, with her "Can Do" attitude and her excellence in the artistry of sewing, quickly earned a name for herself in her chosen occupation. She was one of the only seamstresses in the Valley of the Sun who would attempt to alter a swimsuit. After a while, due to her skill, she started to attract customers to the shop where she worked. Mary had to change her place of occupation a couple of times, and each time a number of customers moved with her. Eventually she was able to begin her own business at home. For a while, she and her husband even used fabric paints to further enhance the garments she sewed. The health of Mary's mother eventually began to fail and Mary took care of her until her death in 1960. Not long after that, the family moved into a trailer house at Holiday Spa Trailer Court, where she and her husband became active in the community programs at the Spa and helped many people with transportation and other services, while keeping up with her occupation as a seamstress. Eventually her husband's health started to fail and she took care of him until his death in March 1983. Mary remained active and in service to others until cancer started to claim her in November of 1989. Besides the pain of the cancer, her only real complaint was that now she had to bother other people to take care of her, rather than her usual occupation of service to others. At the end, Mary was not afraid of death. She could feel the closeness of her husband and her mother, and she felt eager to be reunited with them. When her body started to fail, she directed the doctors to stop all of their treatment and let her die. We, her sons, agreed with her wishes and she died Friday, June 15th. Her last words were to me; "Dad's here. It's time to go." Her memory remains with us. She was a noble person, a servant to us all, and I know that our Heavenly Father has prepared a special place for her within his many mansions.
