!PERSONAL MEMORY: Donald L. Spidell

Family tradition has it that John William didn't like his name, so he just changed it on his own. The story also goes that, upon learning of the benefits that the American Indians were gettin, he started claiming to be 1/4 Indian. He was a very colorful individual, and he was a great story teller. I enjoyed listening to him, and he used to bring me gifts that were always unusual and interesting. The one gift that has always stuck in my mind is a bag of clay marbles. The marbles were glazed with brown, and they were grossly uneven and misshapen, but I liked them because they were unusual. I could never use them in a game of marbles, because they were so irregular, but I kept them for a long time. Jay Larane Spidel also dressed in a soft leather jacket with large lapels, a floppy soft leather hat, and jeans with a liberal use of beads and feathers. At one time during the life of the Jay Larane family, the spelling of the Spidell name came into dispute. Jay Larane insisted that the name was Spidel, while most of the rest of the family, my father included, insisted that it was spell Spidell, so some of the children spelled it one way, and some of them spelled it another. My research shows that it was probably spelled Spidle, and that it was probably, originally, Speidel. He was regaled as a story teller, a liar, and practically a bum, but I liked him.
